Living and Working in the USA

Coming to America to work is an exciting experience. And at Rehability Care, we do our best to make it a richly rewarding one, in many ways.

Because the U.S. is experiencing its most serious therapist shortage in history, you'll have many options in choosing your assignments.

Many internationally trained therapists will tell you there is no better way for Therapists to improve their skills and professional experience than by working in a U.S. hospital. You will have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, acute-care environment that will challenge you to expand your practice.

Assessment skills will be one of the major areas of development in the first few months. The U.S. therapist performs full head-to-toe assessments on patients, including lung sounds, heart sounds, tendon reflexes and neurological assessments. These skills will quickly become second nature to you and will greatly improve the standard of care you can deliver to your patients.

As part of the interdisciplinary team, the therapist is both a care-planner and decision-maker. Your decisions will be based on your clinical assessment skills and knowledge. With the skills you acquire, you will grow in confidence and develop the ability to analyze clinical situations in order to provide the very best care to your patients. Other members of the team may include the respiratory therapist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, dietician, social worker, attending physician and any consulting specialty physicians.

Documentation is a vital aspect of the therapist's role. It may initially seem a little overwhelming, but you will soon find that precise documentation provides a very safe and secure basis for your practice. And it ensures that all of your patients' needs are identified and met.

Most U.S. hospitals schedule their therapists for either five eight-hour shifts per week (usually 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., or 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.), or three twelve-hour shifts per week (usually 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., or 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.). U.S. hospitals also have their own policies with regard to day, evening and night shifts, as well as weekend and holiday assignments. Weekend and holiday assignments are generally shared by all therapists, but hospitals do hire for specific shifts: day, evening or night.

You can expect your first year in a U.S. hospital to be an extraordinary learning experience. The environment is fast paced, there are new skills to learn and the patient load can be substantial. The experience you gain during this year will help you grow in your nursing profession.

Prior to your arrival in the US, Rehability Care will begin working with our client healthcare facilities to review their current openings. We will endeavor to match each therapist's skills and assignment-length preference with the client staffing needs. Rehability Care offers eighteen-month assignments and thirteen- to 26-week travel assignments.

The eighteen-month assignment option is perfect for our therapists who want the opportunity to settle into a community. You will be assigned to one hospital. Those who may prefer this option include:
  • Therapists who want to settle down and establish lasting friendships in their work and social environments
  • Therapists who would like to settle into one hospital or unit instead of traveling to a new facility three to four times a year
  • Therapists with spouses who want to find employment (it normally takes a few months for your spouse to obtain the necessary paperwork from the INS to begin working in the U.S.)
  • Therapists with infants or children who will need childcare or who will need to be enrolled in the local school system.

The thirteen- to 26-week travel assignment option allows our Therapists to visit a variety of hospitals and geographic locations across the United States. Those who prefer this option may include:

  • Therapists who want the opportunity to travel, visit new places and meet new people
  • Therapists who want to challenge themselves and enhance their clinical skills in a variety of different healthcare facilities
  • Therapists who want to explore the many different terrains and climates available throughout the United States.

At Rehability Care, we will provide you with detailed information on your hospital and surrounding area. We will also arrange for a personal interview with the prospective hospital. And we will even give you interview tips and a list of questions for the hospital representative.

When you arrive in the United States, a Rehability Care representative will be there to meet you. We will have already made arrangements for your transition to your new hospital and community. Your Rehability Care representative will also help you get a bank account, obtain a driver's license, purchase a car and make housing arrangements, if not already confirmed.

We know that it can take some time for you to feel comfortable in your new surroundings. That's why you will be assigned to a recruiter at Rehability Care who will be there as a friend, as a resource and as a "family" member away from home.

In a country as geographically and demographically diverse as the United States, you will find great variety in the landscape, climate, culture and lifestyles. Some of the most breathtaking sites of natural beauty in the world are located in the U.S. There are large metropolitan cities, sprawling suburban towns and countless rural communities. Rehability Care has exciting opportunities in each of these types of locations.

With something for every taste and every sense of adventure, you will have endless options for entertainment. Each change of season provides the opportunity to experience new pastimes. With the availability of low-cost travel, you will have the chance to visit all fifty states. You will be exposed to the arts (museums, concerts, the ballet), sporting events (football, basketball, baseball, soccer, golf and many others) theme parks (Disneyland and World, Universal Studios, Six Flags, Sea World and others) national parks (The Everglades National Park, Cape Cod National Seashore, Mount Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and Yosemite). The opportunities are virtually endless.

If you enjoy dining out or shopping, you will feel right at home in the U.S. There are many restaurants that can satisfy the discriminating palate. The wide variety of ethnic and regional menus suits every taste and every budget. Since the U.S. economy is consumer based, retailing is considered a very competitive business. The result is that the U.S. is one of the world's best markets for consumers in terms of selection, price and value.
